Learn to Sail
Sail Chicago has taught thousands of adults to sail affordably since our program began in 1958. Basic, Intermediate, and Skipper Prep sailing lessons are aboard our small keelboats in two Chicago harbor locations. Our instructors are all certified by Sail Chicago. Many are also certified as Basic Keelboat Instructors by US SAILING. In order to take classes, students must be members of Sail Chicago or participants in the Sail Into Summer program.
Due to unprecedented demand this 2013 season, many of Sail Chicago's sailing classes have filled up earlier than usual. We encourage you to sign up for membership and take advantages of our other programs as they become available. Our cruising program and single handed courses will be available shortly, please contact instruction@sailchicago.org if you have any questions.

Skipper Training provides sailors with an opportunity to solidify material learned in Basic and Intermediate Sailing courses and is intended to develop the additional skills required to skipper a boat on your own. Topics include solidifying your small boat handling skills, including harbor sailing, mooring departures and returns under sail, crew overboard recovery, crew coordination, heavy weather sailing tactics, weather, safety on the water, and Sail Chicago procedures.
New members who have sailed a boat on their own may enroll in this course as part of their New Member Package. Successful completion of this course is required in order to qualify to reserve Sail Chicago boats.
In order to qualify for Skipper certification, students will need to adequately demonstrate a mastery of skipper skills necessary for basic keelboat checkout. Qualification for Skipper certification is at the discretion of the instructor.
