Fleet

The Sail Chicago fleet began with the purchase of a brand new Rhodes 19 design in the late 1950's. Today we and operate a sailboat fleet of 10 sailboats. Our fleet is comprised of Ideal 18s, Rhodes 19s, Colgate 26s, and a Hunter 34.

We are a non-profit, community-based sailing program that allows our members to cooperatively use and maintain a fleet of sailboats without the severe financial burden typical of individual ownership. The Sail Chicago program is designed to provide a reasonable cost alternative (or enhancement) to boat ownership on Lake Michigan.

Small Keelboats

Sail Chicago owns and maintains a fleet of basic keelboats for instruction and private use. Our fixed-keel boats provide excellent stability with simple layouts designed for easy handling and quick learning. Beginner and intermediate sailing classes are held on these safe and stable sailboats.   In addition to our 4 Rhodes 19s, we now have two Ideal 18 sailboats. These are great for easy handling and excellent stability. With several convenient features like a furling and self-tacking jib, and a self-bailing cockpit, the Ideal 18 is easy to rig and fun to sail.

Colgate 26

Sail Chicago has recently acquired two Colgate 26s to serve as a "step-up" in our Basic Keelboat program. With an outboard motor, large cockpit, furling jib, and small cabin for storage, this boat has the amenities that sailors look for, with the simplicity of a smaller boat. This boat was designed by Steve Colgate and Tim Jackett specifically for sailing instruction as well as use as a day sailor and racer and has won numerous awards. Used by top sail training programs around the world including the United States Naval Academy and Maine Maritime academy, the Colgate 26 an excellent platform for Sail Chicago.

Cruising Boats

The cruising boat program includes a Hunter 34 situated at Belmont Harbor. It is is a popular choice for those interested in preparing for bareboat charters.
